COLUMBUS, Ind. — A tornado was spotted in Bartholomew County Wednesday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said just before 9 p.m., a confirmed tornado was located seven miles east of Columbus. According to reports from Bartholomew County Emergency Management and NWS, the communities of Newbern, Hartsville, Elizabethtown, Grammer, Hope, Azalia, Walesboro, Ceraland, Jonesville, the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds, and Petersville were all impacted.
Sgt. Dane Duke with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office commented that the most significant damage was in the eastern part of the county. There was reported wind damage, a litany of utility poles snapped, a barn collapsed, and trees were uprooted. Still, the most significant damage was the downing of two main transmission lines. County Road 525E, between S.R. 46 and County Road 100S will be shut down for days due to transmission lines failure.
Columbus officials say no significant damage has been reported in the City. No injuries or fatalities have been reported in the city or county.
As of 5:30 a.m., S.R. 9 is closed due to debris. U.S. 31 was closed for a short time but has reopened.
Hundreds of residents have been reported to be without power. Information will be updated as it becomes available.
