COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew County Historical Society has opened a new exhibit, Hoops and Heritage: The Evolution of Basketball in Bartholomew County.
It celebrates the rich history of basketball, from its humble beginnings to its place in the hearts of Bartholomew County residents, highlighting the sport’s impact on both a national scale and locally. Learn about area basketball legends and hall of famers and enjoy artifacts from the historical society’s collection.
Guests will also enjoy memorabilia from Chuck Taylor, a Bartholomew County resident, Columbus High School graduate, former basketball player, and legend for the still-famous Chuck Taylor Converse All-Star tennis shoe.
Bartholomew County is a prime example of this Hoosier basketball passion. Memorial Gymnasium in Columbus, the 13th largest high school gym in the United States, is a testament to the county’s commitment to the game. Indiana is home to 27 of the 35 largest high school gyms in America. “Hoosier Hysteria” reverberates throughout the county.
The Bartholomew County Historical Society’s Hoops and Heritage gets you ready for the first-ever “Chuck Taylor Day” on Saturday, June 7. It will include basketball-themed activities for all ages, food trucks, beverages, a kids’ zone, bands, and more. The free community event will be held near the Historical Society Museum at 524 3rd St.
