GREENWOOD, Ind. – The City of Greenwood announced Monday that it is building a $1.3 million 16-court pickleball facility at Freedom Park, making it the largest pickleball complex in Johnson County.
The complex, which will be north of Freedom Springs Aquatic Park, will have the ability to host sanctioned pickleball tournaments in hopes of increasing tourism efforts, according to a news release.
“Over the course of the next year, we are expanding our outdoor facility offerings with this complex and the Greenwood Sports Park coming to fruition,” said Mayor Mark W. Myers. “Both facilities are a direct response to the increased demand from residents, but we also look forward to welcoming visitors from around Indiana and the Midwest to our backyard.”
With this complex, the Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department plans to add an additional 120 parking spots at Freedom Park to accommodate pickleball and aquatic center visitors.
“Greenwood has embraced pickleball from its inception with our first courts being established in 2017,” said Director of Greenwood Parks and Recreation, Rob Taggart. “The sport is attracting players of all ages and we are excited to increase access by adding additional outdoor courts.”
The tentative opening date for the complex is late spring 2024. For more information, visit greenwood.in.gov.
