COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of N. Marr Rd. and 29th St., on Halloween, at around 11:15 p.m. The car was observed failing to maintain its lane and crossing over the center line.
The driver, Travis McCarty, 34, of Columbus, reportedly displayed signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The suspect was transported to Columbus Regional Health (CRH) for a blood draw for the DUI investigation. While at the hospital McCarty allegedly tried to punch a CRH police officer which led to a physical altercation.
During the altercation one law enforcement officer was injured in the face area and was treated at CRH. Also during the fight, one of the officers involved supposedly felt McCarty pulling at the officer’s holstered service weapon.
He was later transported to Bartholomew County Jail and charged with Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated, Battery on a Public Safety Official, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Attempting to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer.
McCarty remains in custody on a 48-hour hold.
