WHITELAND, Ind. – The Whiteland Police Department (WPD) has given an update regarding the health status of police K9 Riggs. The police dog is undergoing medical treatment after becoming abruptly ill last week.
K9 Riggs began feeling unwell and his handler, Sgt. Doss, consulted with a vet right away for preliminary tests. resulting in Riggs being started on antibiotics. After getting some abnormal blood work results, Riggs was taken to an animal hospital in Beech Grove for continued treatment.
An exact diagnosis is still undetermined, but the K9 is responding to treatment and was released Wednesday for continued in-home treatments. More bloodwork testing is scheduled to take place in the weeks ahead.
Police say the dog’s sickness is not connected to the mysterious dog illness that has been reported in several states over the past month.
The initial GoFundMe for help with medical on Riggs has been closed and all donations received from it will be going towards the medical bill for treatments to date.
Donations to assist with medical costs incurred by the WPD K9 program can be made directly to the Whiteland Police Department or the Town of Whiteland.
