GREENSBURG, Ind. – Two people were injured, one seriously, when a car slammed into a Greensburg gas station building, wiping out shelves and coming to a stop at the register where an employee was working.
The Greensburg Fire Department said the accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. on Monday at the Tree City Travel Plaza, at 1373 N. Michigan Ave., near the I-74 exit.
The Greensburg Police Department said the driver, Michael Ely, 26, of Seymour, suffered a medical episode that caused him to veer off Michigan Road and drive through a field before smashing through the entrance of the gas station.
An employee was standing at the register when the vehicle, a Chevy Malibu, slammed through the glass doors and came to a rest against the checkout register counter.
Police said the employee suffered minor injuries. Ely was transported to Decatur County Memorial Hospital with a head wound. There were no other injuries.
The fire department said the building sustained “major structural damage.” The crash remains under investigation by police.
