COLUMBUS, Ind. – Bartholomew County Corrections Officers observed two inmates in medical distress on Monday at around 5:30 p.m. They immediately began emergency response procedures.
It was determined that the inmates were suffering from an overdose, one of whom required the administration of Narcan. The pair was transported to Columbus Regional Health where they were treated and returned to the jail.
The jail nursing staff was dispatched to the cell block, and all inmates were evaluated for signs of medical distress. Two more inmates showed symptoms of impairment and were also taken to the hospital as a precaution.
“The safety and well-being of the inmates is our number one priority. I commend my Corrections staff for using their training and adhering to our policy in responding. Their quick action demonstrates professionalism and dedication to caring for those under their supervision,” said Sheriff Lane.
An investigation began and a suspect was identified within hours. Corrections staff and JNET (Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team) detectives worked for over 24 hours conducting interviews, which resulted in an alleged confession from the suspect.
Dai Von Coram, 27, of Columbus, was arrested and charged with Dealing in a Narcotic Drug (Level 4 Felony), Trafficking with an Inmate (Level 5 Felony), and Obstruction of Justice (Level 6 Felony). The suspect is being held on $80,000 bond.
