COLUMBUS, Ind. – Ivy Tech Community College Columbus students Luke Lanam and Tyler Seaver recently won a national competition organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), earning the top score out of 60 teams representing colleges from coast to coast. Assistant Professor Ron Walling coordinated the participation by Ivy Tech Columbus.
The ASME Community College Engineering Pathways Fall Impromptu 2024 Challenge tests the skills and knowledge of engineering students through a practical design challenge. Teams design, build, and demonstrate a device to complete a task, all using common craft supplies. In the challenge, students demonstrate innovation and practical application of classroom concepts in a real-world scenario.
ASME launched the challenge in October, and winners were announced in mid-November. Lanam and Seaver, both from Seymour, won the competition with a score of 210. The average score was 150. They are studying in the Ivy Tech Columbus Mechanical Engineering Technology program.
Ivy Tech Columbus offers Engineering, Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs, including a path to a four-year Purdue University degree called Green2Gold.
