NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The North Vernon Police Department (NVPD), Jennings County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), and North Vernon Fire Department (NVFD) were dispatched Friday to Moir’s Harmony House apartments on Moir Avenue in North Vernon after the report of smoke coming from one of the units.
Upon arrival, officials discovered smoke emanating from an apartment in the building’s basement.
While speaking with the tenant, officers and deputies noticed heavy smoke and flames coming from the bathroom. They helped the tenant out of the apartment and extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher. Emergency responders assisted in evacuating the building. No injuries were reported.
JCSO, NVPD, and NVFD remind citizens to install working smoke detectors in their residences and to check the batteries regularly.
