NORTH VERNON, Ind. — North Vernon residents gathered at the City Council meeting on Monday, March 31, and pleaded their case to the board regarding a new neighbor who has installed a kennel in their backyard on South Street. They protested about noise, health hazards, property devaluation, concerns for the quality of life of the dogs, and risk to children should any of the dogs escape.
The owners of the kennel, who run Aoife Haus Police K9 LLC, a dog training company in Scottsburg, were not present at the City Council meeting due to a family medical situation. One of the owners, Cora, later responded that the dogs at the South Street address are the family’s personal dogs and not a part of Aoife Haus. She said that police dog sales and training are conducted in Scottsburg, and all in-person civilian training is done at the Scottsburg location or in a client’s home.
Cora said she, her husband, and child have only been living at the South Street house in North Vernon since March 11, 2025.
According to her, the barking dogs that are causing the noise are actually located on Harms Street, which is adjacent to South Street. The dogs in her backyard are her personal dogs and are not affiliated with her business. She clarified that there are six dogs outside and three inside.
“I have cameras on every end of my house, my dogs are not barking day in and day out,” the dog owner said. “Even if they were, there is zero dog barking ordinance.”
Cora added that her dogs all wear shocking bark collars, meaning that “if they so much as whine, it beeps; if they bark, it immediately shocks them.” The owner claims that her backyard is nice and well-kept. She says she feels harassed by her neighbors and local government officials.
“All that needed to be done was to have a conversation with us, be good neighbors, and give us a chance,” said Cora, claiming that these problems started before they ever had their dogs at the South Street location.
She is considering legal action against those who continue to harass, defame, and slander her and her business.
