COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Young Marines have received a proclamation from Vice Presidential candidate and Indiana Governor Mike Pence declaring October 23-31, “Red Ribbon Week”. Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign established in 1980 by concerned parents who want to take a leadership role in drug prevention. The late Nancy Reagan is a former honorary chairperson of the event. The Columbus Young Marines will tie red ribbons around trees in the downtown area.
The Columbus Young Marines are hosting an essay contest for young people from grades 7 to 12. The essay topic is “What it means to me, to be drug free”. The essay should be at least one page, have a 10-point font, and be double spaced. The essay contest is sponsored by the Kroger Co. and CTF Trucking. The top prize is $200, second prize is $100, and the third prize is $50.
The Young Marines strengthen the lives of youth in America by teaching self-confidence, academic achievement, honoring veterans, good citizenship, community service, and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is open to all boys and girls, ages eight through completion of high school. The only membership requirement is that the youth must be in good standing at school.
