COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a robbery that initiated with an offer on Facebook.
Deputies met the victim in the 8700 block of Old Nashville Road around 11:00 p.m. on Monday. The victim told police he had responded to a Facebook ad offering a cell phone for sale, and met the alleged seller. The seller told the victim he was going to take him to his residence. Upon arrival at the residence, the seller pointed an unknown object at the victim and demanded his cell phone and wallet. The suspect took the items and fled the area. Deputies attempted to track the suspect with a canine but were unable to locate him.
Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers says: “If you are buying or selling to someone you met online, ask specific questions that someone who owns the product would know. If they can’t answer basic questions, there is a good chance they don’t actually have the product and chances are it is a setup to rob you.”
