COLUMBUS, Ind. — Although winter is not officially here, central and southern Indiana will get their first taste of cold weather this weekend. Here are some preparations to take for the upcoming winter season.
For your car:
- Change the engine oil and check the cooling system
- Check tire pressure
- Make sure your windshield wipers and blades are in good working order
- Check all running lights
- Keep emergency supplies in the trunk
- Be sure to have a good ice scraper
For your home:
- Disconnect outside water hoses and drain
- Block any openings to the crawl space or basement
- Check and replace weather stripping as needed
- Never set your thermostat lower than 55 degrees
- Check furnace, flu and chimney to guard against carbon monoxide poisoning
- Keep at least a three-day supply of fresh water per person in the home
- Keep salt or sand for slick surfaces
For you:
- Dress in layers
- Stay hydrated
- Cover exposed skin in extreme cold
- Know the symptoms of frostbite
