GREENWOOD, Ind. — City of Greenwood officials and representatives from the Greenwood Community School Corporation have reached a $1 million purchase agreement for the current Greenwood Middle School property. The 19-acre property is located at 523 South Madison Ave.
“It’s not often a property of this size, in the heart of a downtown, becomes available to be reimagined,” said Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers. “Old Town’s resurgence continues to gain momentum, and this is another important milestone.” Myers added, “The potential for this property is off the charts, and we plan to tap into every last bit.”
The new middle school is under construction on the southwest side of town and is scheduled to open for the 2017-18 academic year. The new building is bigger and will offer more opportunities for sports, music and other extracurricular activities.
President of the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission, Brent Tilson, believes this deal will benefit all parties.
“This is a win-win-win,” said Tilson. “The middle school will have a brand new home, the city will possess an asset with transformative potential, and Greenwood citizens will enjoy the many benefits of economic development, including more job opportunities, increased property values and exponential community investment.’
City officials are still considering possible uses for the property.
