INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — More than 600 residents have applied for the Next Generation Hoosier Educator Scholarship. Officials will select 200 people for the scholarship that provides $7,500 per year and requires the student to teach in Indiana for at least five years after graduation.
The applications have come from 273 schools in 84 of Indiana’s 92 counties. Two-thirds are high school seniors, and the balance of the applicants are current college students.
“We’re encouraged by the overwhelming positive response from aspiring teachers who want to make a difference in Indiana classrooms,” Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers said. “The Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship creates an important opportunity to bring more of our best and brightest students into the teaching profession.”
To qualify, students must be in the top 20 percent of their class or score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT. To maintain the scholarship, students must complete 30 credit hours per year and hold a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Finalists will be selected by January 31, and winners will be notified in April.
