COLUMBUS, Ind. — The city of Columbus has applied for two mobility awards from the Indiana Department of Transportation as part of a plan to mitigate increased railroad traffic. The move is the first step to reconfigure the intersection State Road 46 and State Road 11.
City officials have identified a five part plan to ease anticipated congestion due to increased railroad traffic. The first project is to relocate the existing Louisville and Indiana line west of its current location. The next is the construction of an overpass for State Road 46 and State Road. The earliest construction could begin for either project would be 2022.
The remaining parts of the plan include installation of “quiet zone” equipment in the city limits, working with county officials to improve Lowell Road for use as an alternate route. Also, officials are positioning emergency equipment and addressing public transportation concerns. More information is available to the public online at columbus.in.gov/.
