COLUMBUS, Ind. — Indiana Congressman from District 6, Luke Messer, will propose legislation that would eliminate tax credits for illegal immigrants. The treasury inspector general released a report showing $4.2 billion was paid out in 2011 to illegal immigrants through the child tax credit. The federal tax credit gives families $1,000 per child.
“Our broken tax and immigration systems continue to incentivize immigrants to come here illegally,” Messer said. “Closing this loophole will steer us back to rule of law, ensure tax benefits like this are reserved for American citizens and save us billions of dollars.”
House Resolution 363 would clarify eligibility for the child tax credit.
