INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana State Department of Health now reports four Hoosiers have died from influenza and new cases are on the rise.
“It’s always heartbreaking to learn that someone died of the flu, and we are just now beginning to enter peak flu season,” said Indiana State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H. “Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent this serious illness, so I hope any Hoosier who hasn’t received a vaccine yet will consider getting one.”
The flu shot is recommended for everyone 6 months and older, but especially for the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses.
Symptoms of the flu include a fever of 100 degrees or higher, headache, fatigue, cough, muscle aches and a sore throat. People experiencing symptoms should frequently wash their hands, avoid touching eyes, mouth and ears, and stay home from work or school until the fever has dropped.
