COLUMBUS, Ind. – An early Wednesday morning one-car crash resulted in the vehicle catching fire and the occupants escaping almost unscathed.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office responded to County Road 500W, at around 2:45 a.m., and found a car fully engulfed in flames. While deputies were trying to see if anyone was inside, two people approached on foot saying they were the ones who had been in the vehicle.
The driver was identified as Sara McCleary, 20, of Columbus, and her passenger as Cody Hyde, 23, of Indianapolis. Both were taken to Columbus Regional Health and treated for minor injuries.
The blaze was extinguished when responding fire departments arrived. The initial investigation suggests that the car was traveling southbound on North County Road 500W when the driver failed to properly navigate the curve in the highway, just north of West Lowell Road. The vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway and overturned, catching fire after the accident.
