SHELBYVILLE, Ind. —(Updated Tuesday, February 21 at 4:10 a.m.)
An Indiana State Police investigation into a Shelbyville police action shooting has determined the victim was shot by police.
Shelbyville police were called to 1100 block of Fallway Court on Tuesday, February 14, around 10:30 p.m. on a report of a man with a gun. As an officer talked to a family member in front of the home, two other officers approached Steven Oliger, 64, as he sat on the back porch. When they saw Oliger was holding a pistol, the two officers in the back yelled a warning to the officer in the front yard. As Oliger stood up he was shot in the head by police with a .223 caliber bullet.
An autopsy confirmed the results of the investigation. Officials say the official report won’t be available for several weeks. Shelbyville police have not released the identity of the officers involved. The investigation is ongoing.

The Shelbyville Police Department was present when a fatal shooting took place Tuesday evening.
Police were called to the 100 block of Fallway Court around 10:30 p.m. on a report of shots fired in a home. When they arrived, one officer began speaking to a family member in front of the house while two other officers approached Steven Oliger, 64, who was sitting on the back deck. When police alerted everyone that Oliger was holding a gun, Oliger fired a single shot.
The officer in the front of the property heard the gunfire and returned a shot in the direction of Oliger from his .223 caliber rifle. Oliger was declared dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators are unclear where the fatal shot came from.
Indiana State Police are working to determine if the fatal shot was self-inflicted. An autopsy is expected to be completed Wednesday.
