SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — A former trustee at a Shelby County church, who also once tried his hand at local politics, has been sentenced for stealing money from the church over a three-year period from 2013-2016. Michael Richardson, of Shelbyville, has been ordered to serve one year in prison, one year on home detention, and four years on probation. Additionally, he must pay $171,334 in restitution to the Lewis Creek Baptist Church.
An attorney for the church reported the theft to the sheriff’s department last August. The attorney told police that Richardson was serving as the treasurer for the church on a volunteer basis. During an interview with police, Richardson admitted to the crime.
