COLUMBUS, Ind. — Daylight Saving Time will begin Sunday, March 12, at 2 a.m. The object of DST is to get more daylight hours in the evening. To illustrate the effect, sunset on Saturday, March 11, will be at 5:59 p.m., while on Sunday, March 12, the sun will set at 7 p.m. Columbus Fire Department Cpt. Mike Wilson recommends changing smoke detector batteries along with clocks.
Benjamin Franklin is credited with developing the idea, but Germany was the first country to implement Daylight Saving Time. In 1916, during World War I, the country began saving daylight to conserve electricity. In the United States, Daylight Saving Time was first established in 1918.
Standard Time returns on November 5, 2017.
