TAYLORSVILLE, Ind. — Quick thinking by a motorist in Taylorsville may have prevented a serious accident on U.S. 31 Saturday.
Deputy chief of the German Township Fire Department Matt Lynch says, at about 5:15 p.m., crews were dispatched to a vehicle fire in the 11700 block of North U.S. 31. Heavy smoke was visible from the station as crews departed. When they arrived at the scene, they found a passenger car fully engulfed in flames. As the flames were being put out firefighters discovered the gas tank was leaking and feeding the fire. A water/foam mix was used to smother the fire. In total, firefighters used more than 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish and cool the car.
The driver told police he was driving north on U.S. 31 when smoke began to fill the passenger compartment. He quickly pulled into the parking lot of the Taylorsville gas station to get help. Investigators credit that quick thinking with possibly preventing a serious crash.
