INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code has voted unanimously in support of a bill presented by Seymour Republican Jim Lucas that would make possession of a handgun by an illegal immigrant a felony.
Lucas says there is no law in Indiana to address the situation. The new ordinance would make the crime punishable by up to 2.5 years in prison, plus a $10,000 fine.
“If a person is here illegally or unlawfully, they do not have the right to possess or carry a firearm,” Lucas said. “This bill would allow Indiana prosecutors to charge these law-breaking individuals with this felony.”
The measure will now be considered by the full house.
