COLUMBUS, Ind. — For the second time this year Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers is cautioning the public about rising auto theft statistics. In 2016 there were 79 vehicles reported stolen, in the first three months of 2017 there have been 25 reported.
Wednesday evening at about 10:00 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a brush fire in a wooded area east of South 100W, and located two vehicles that had been reported stolen. Officers found a Honda Prelude that was ripped-off from the Edinburgh area that was fully engulfed in flames, and a Chevrolet taken from the Columbus area which was running, but had no damage.
Sheriff Myers reminds residents to “keep your vehicles locked.” He added, “Don’t make it easy for a car thief to take your car and your valuables.” Myers also reminds residents that garage door openers left inside your vehicle while it is parked outside will give a thief an opportunity to enter your home.
