INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The USO of Indiana will present the 2017 Five Star Medal to former Indiana Adjutant General R. Martin Umbarger and his wife, Rowana. Over the past several decades the couple has provided unwavering support to the families of Indiana veterans.
The Five Star Medal is symbolic of the five branches of the military: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. This prestigious award recognizes exemplary dedication and service to our military members and their families.
“You will discover that the hands of the Umbargers have touched virtually every military family program offered in the state,” said Charles Ridings, Executive Director for the USO of Indiana. “Their service to improve the quality of life for our military families will resonate for decades,” he added.
The Umbargers will receive the award on September 16, during the USO of Indiana’s fourth annual Five Star Gala in Indianapolis. Proceeds from the event fund the operations of the USO of Indiana.
Past winners of the award include The Honorable Richard Lugar.
