INDIANAPOLIS – Judge Doris L. Pryor has been elevated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, making her the first black jurist in the state to do so. The 7th Circuit covers Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
President Joe Biden nominated Pryor on May 25, and the U.S. Senate confirmed her on December 5. Indiana Sens. Todd Young and Mike Braun voted for her confirmation.
Judge Pryor has served as a magistrate judge since 2018. Prior to that, she was the National Security Chief for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana for four years. From 2006 until her appointment as National Security Chief, she served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.
Pryor obtained her law degree from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2003 and was admitted to the bar the same year.
While the 7th Circuit is based in Chicago, Judge Pryor will maintain her primary chambers in Indianapolis. She will travel to Chicago for oral arguments and other 7th Circuit business.
