COLUMBUS, Ind. — The City Council heard from members of the community regarding a change to the ordinances which define domestic animals, pets, and farm animals. The definition would restrict chickens from being maintained within city limits, as they would only be considered a farm animal.
The issue has long been discussed and will continue to be debated. After hearing public opinions on both sides of the issue, the council voted to table the discussion until October 4th. This will allow community members to form a committee of 10 members, five members who are opposed of backyard chickens and five members for the decision to keep chickens in city limits.
The council members who voted to table the discussion are hopeful the volunteer-based committee will be able to come to a compromise which will make both sides happy. This plan insures both sides of the debate are able to have a voice in the final regulations that will be imposed.
