COLUMBUS, Ind. – At Monday evening’s meeting of the Bartholomew County Drainage Board, residents of the Armuth Acres and North Cliff subdivisions, along with the town of Clifford, presented their recent flooding experiences and how it has affected their daily lives.
A 2003 engineering study resulting from a petition drafted at the time by area residents, was brought into the discussion. After that study’s remedy was publicly proposed, eleven residents asked to have their names withdrawn from the petition, which is why it has lain dormant for 16 years.
A current resident said she had a new petition signed by over 50 residents that she would deliver to the surveyor’s office on Tuesday. Board attorney Grant Tucker explained that state code requires that the combined assessed value of the property of petition signers must be 25 percent of the total of the area in question.
Board member Jeff Schroer added, “This board is regulated very specifically by state law. You have to go by that law to get our help.” He also endorsed an audience member’s suggestion that relevant bodies pursue a FEMA grant.
