WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Students at Purdue University have begun the assembly process for the first 18 flagship Indiana bicentennial torches.
The flagship torches are made with ultra lightweight aluminum-lithium, and the smaller pieces are made with a 3D printer. The torches weigh about five pounds and are about two feet tall, and feature GPS and camera functions with WiFi. New York-based Alcoa Inc. has donated about $100,000 in labor and materials to complete the project.
The project is almost a year in the making. The torch relay begins in September and will cover all 92 Indiana counties.
