COLUMBUS, Ind. – Indiana Forward Coalition and Columbus community leaders are calling on the Indiana House of Representatives to restore the enumerated list of protected classes to SB 12. “Columbus Speaks” is scheduled for Thursday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m., at The Commons in downtown Columbus.
Indiana is one of just five states without a hate crimes law in place. Hate crimes laws allow judges to enact stricter sentences for criminals that target victims based on characteristics such as race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability.
Indiana Forward is advocating for the 2019 Indiana General Assembly to pass a clear, specific and comprehensive bias crimes law. The campaign is united by the principles that Indiana’s lack of a hate crimes law sends an unwelcoming message to the people who live here and the businesses and talent who are considering making the Hoosier State their home.
Mayor Jim Leinhoop, Mike Leppert from Indiana Forward, vice presidents from Cummins and Columbus Regional Health, and other local dignitaries will be present.
