FRANKLIN, Ind.–At Monday night’s city council meeting, Franklin Mayor Steve Barnett addressed a growing concern of strange vapors emitting from the ground around the city. The vapors were documented and brought to light by several concern citizens through Facebook posts. Barnett said that the city had received additional information through the Edison Wetlands Association. He reported that city officials had already talked about meeting later this week to address this concern with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH).
He also stated that tests are currently being performed to draw a conclusion regarding unconfirmed ground contamination. At this moment, the council does not know what is causing these vapors or what they are made of. The mayor continued that the city of Franklin would be reaching out to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), requesting that the scope of the tests be expanded.
Barnett stressed that Franklin’s water is completely safe and that city council will remain on top of this issue.
