GREENWOOD, Ind. — Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers has unveiled his vision for downtown.
The plan for the area surrounding the intersection of Main Street and Madison Avenue includes 1.9 miles of new or reconstructed streetscape, almost 10 acres of new or upgraded open space, potentially more than 75,000-square-feet of retail space, and a mix of apartments and townhomes. The streetscape areas will provide bicycle and pedestrian paths along Main Street, Madison Avenue and Market Plaza.
“This is Greenwood’s moment,” said Myers. “Our plans for the future of downtown envision a thriving city core with walkability, connectivity for trails, parks and other public assets, and dynamic public gathering spaces. We’ll have diverse, authentic amenities, seamless integration of greenspace, and opportunities for all ages to live, work and play in downtown Greenwood.”
During the presentation Myers emphasized the importance of public input and used the Greenwood Middle School gymnasium as an example.
President of the Greenwood redevelopment commission, Brent Tilson, says this is milestone announcement for the city. “I’ve never been more excited for Greenwood’s future,” stated Tilson. “This vision positions Greenwood as a major player in the central Indiana landscape, for both current and future generations. The RDC and city have been working toward this announcement for quite some time now, and we’re so pleased to share our plans for the future.”
Plans for a public open house were announced for Thursday, March 9, at 6 p.m., at the Greenwood City Center, 300 South Madison Ave. Residents can look at plans and interact with the mayor and other city officials.
