COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department was called to GreenTree Assisted Living on the west side of town Thursday afternoon because of an accumulation of water outside the facility. Heavy rains and saturated ground caused an overflow of a retention pond located at the nearby Westwood Pines Apartments.
Although no water entered the facility, firefighters requested a precautionary evacuation of 20 ground floor residents due to the condition of the retention pond water levels.
The Columbus Department of Public Works deployed pump trucks to the scene to aid in lowering the water level of the pond. Firefighters remained on the scene until all first-floor residents were relocated.
According to Green Tree representatives, the affected residents will be staying with family members.
