COLUMBUS, Ind. — State transportation officials are raising awareness about safe driving during National Work Zone Awareness Week April 11-15.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has approximately 800 projects scheduled statewide this summer.
“Each one of them has some sort of cone zone, barrel zone, narrowing pavement or concrete barrier wall,” said INDOT spokesperson Harry Maginity. “We just want to advise motorists to be aware after a winter hiatus that these areas you need to exercise extreme caution.”
Work-zone crashes claimed 17 lives in Indiana in 2015. Those numbers were lower than in years past, Maginity added.
“Don’t tailgate, stay focused and slow down. It takes just one minute longer to drive through a two mile work zone at 45 mph than it does at 60 mph,” Maginity said.
