NORTH VERNON, Ind. – In honor of its 25th-anniversary celebration, the Jennings County Community Foundation hosted an essay contest in February for all sixth-grade students in the county. The essays were supposed to answer two questions: What is a philanthropist? And, why is philanthropy important? The children were also asked to give examples.

Countywide, there were 208 entries and seven winners were chosen, one from each Jennings County elementary school.

The top essayists were Claire Hack, of Scipio Elementary School; Angel Phelps, of Sand Creek Elementary School; Maddix Elston, of St. Mary’s School; Ameilla Cline, of North Vernon Elementary School; Emmalee Henry, of Graham Creek Elementary School; Kaelyn Pelo, of Brush Creek Elementary School; and Kaley Winget, of Hayden Elementary School.
