COLUMBUS, Ind. – Lt. Matt Harris, public relations officer with the Columbus Police Department (CPD), says a Bartholomew County man was apprehended early Saturday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated when he was found unconscious in his vehicle by officers.
CPD responded to the intersection of 11th and California Streets around 4:20 a.m. after a report of a person passed out inside a vehicle in the middle of the roadway.
Officers say they had difficulty waking the driver, who was later identified as Del L. Armstrong, 33, of Columbus. Law enforcement noted that Armstrong’s foot was on the brake pedal and the vehicle was running.
The suspect was eventually awakened and he reportedly failed several field sobriety tests at the scene of the traffic stop. He later allegedly refused to submit to a chemical test, so officers applied for and received a search warrant for a blood draw.
Armstrong was placed under arrest, transported to Bartholomew County Jail, and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
