COLUMBUS, Ind.–A request by Barkefellers, an Indianapolis-based upscale boarding and grooming business for pets, to change the classification of its proposed Columbus location from kennel to pet care facility narrowly passed the Columbus Plan Commission on Wednesday night. A first motion, to deny the request, resulted in a 5-to-5 tie. When reworded as a motion to approve, with staff recommendations, it passed with a vote of 6-to-4.
The owners of Barkefellers say their business model is based on luxury services for pets. Barkefellers intends to come before the commission again next month with changes to the design of its proposed building in the Columbus Crossing retail development.
In other business, the commission approved the Bartholomew County Commissioners’ request for the rezoning of the land it is purchasing for the construction of a new highway garage. It will be changed from agricultural to public facility. The site is within city jurisdiction.
