COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Marion County man was arrested on three felony charges Thursday evening after he reportedly stole several bottles of alcohol from a Columbus store.
Matt Harris, public relations officers with the Columbus Police Department (CPD), says law enforcement was dispatched to the eastside Walmart, 735 Whitfield Drive, at around 6:10 p.m., in regards to a possible shoplifter attempting to steal alcohol from the store.
The suspect, later identified as Stephen A. Banks, 32, of Indianapolis, fled on foot when officers confronted him. During the pursuit, CPD advised that the supposed thief was holding a silver-colored handgun as he ran towards a nearby farm field. He allegedly dropped the weapon during the chase and it was recovered by police. Officers say the gun was loaded.
After the man was taken into custody a short time later, authorities say they also located heroin concealed inside his clothing.
Banks was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was booked for resisting law enforcement with a deadly weapon, possession of heroin, and possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon.
