INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The U. S. Department of Agriculture says the Indiana corn and soy bean harvest could be close to record levels this year. The August Crop Production report projects a soy bean harvest of close to 312 million bushels and corn harvest of more than 1 billion bushels. The report was issued at the Indiana State Fair last week. Officials say 73 percent of the state’s corn crop and 74 percent of the soybean crop were in good or excellent condition.
Nationally the USDA says corn production could hit 15.2 billion bushels and the soybean harvest could hit 4 billion bushels.
Last year large portions of the crops were hit by heavy rains and flooding in June then extreme dry conditions for the remainder of the growing season.
