COLUMBUS, Ind. – As a result of the winter storm and temperatures hovering around zero by Monday morning, Duke Energy and Columbus City Utilities urge you to prepare for power outages, frozen pipes, and other possibilities.
Columbus City Utilities recommends taking precautions to prevent home water lines from becoming frozen. Leaving a trickle of water run in the faucet farthest from the water source or next to an outside wall can prevent pipes from freezing. If pipes do freeze, call Columbus City Utilities first, before you call a plumber.
Duke Energy says snow typically has little impact on the electric system. However, heavy wet snow accumulation, freezing rain, and high winds can bring down trees, limbs, and power lines, which can cause outages. You are also reminded to move family members with special needs to safe, alternative locations in the event of an extended power outage.
Customers of Duke Energy who experience outages because of the storm should text OUT to 57801, or call 1-800-343-3525.
