COLUMBUS, Ind.—This Sunday, exactly one century ago, World War I came to an end at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1918. Originally called Armistice Day for the armistice with Germany that was enacted, over the years the celebration blossomed into a day to salute United States veterans and victims of all wars, plus honor all active service personnel.
Many schools throughout the area have held special ceremonies to honor local veterans this past week. The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic is performing a Veterans Day tribute concert with a program of patriotic music to honor those who sacrifice for their country, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., at the Columbus North Erne Auditorium.
Many restaurants in the area have special deals for veterans, ranging from free dessert to a free meal.
